While some what rare in America, it's fairly widespread in China. Literally, millions of people get up to do their forms every morning in local parks. Why do taiji in the park? Well, there is a lot more space for one thing. My ceilings are a little low to be swinging a sword around, not to mention my cat's fascination with the tassel. One reason though is propagation of taiji it's self. By doing the form on a regular basis, in a public space, people who might otherwise not be exposed, get a glimpse and a chance to investigate further. On a typical day, a good ten minutes of my routine consists of answering questions from curious passer-bys. Most express interest, some come back to join in and one actually stuck with it (way to go Joe!). I think, even without talking directly to people, a 'seed' has been planted. And whether it's the 'energy' or the half-dozen guys with swords, the park's atmosphere has improved drastically. Even the local drunks seem more subdued. So, in the interest of expanding our influence, I decided to create this blog. Hopefully it will serve to connect us to the larger taiji community. (Send me an email if you want a link.) It should also serve as a larger forum for me to answer/elaborate on questions raised by students or passerbys. Hope you enjoy.
